Mum of two, Laura, knew she wanted to find a career that gave her flexibility, and the chance to get out from behind a desk. After being made redundant last year, she decided it was time to pursue something new. When the opportunity to become a We Love Pets franchisee came up, it felt like the perfect fit!

Why did you choose a franchise over setting up your own business?

After I was made redundant, I did think about setting up on my own, but I knew first-hand just how much time, energy and investment were required upfront as my husband has an independently run heating company. When he set it up in 2018, he didn’t have a clue how to get started, and had to do a lot of research. So, the pre-established and proven business model, and support from the We Love Pets network, sold me on a franchise!

Why did you choose WLP?

When I was first looking, I sent an email to We Love Pets and Ryan rung me straight away. He was so friendly and immediately put my mind at ease, I loved how the company was like one big family. He even offered to have a call with my husband too, which we really appreciated.

Did you look at any other franchises?

No, speaking with Ryan was so comforting that we didn’t look at any others.

What did the word ‘franchise’ mean to you before you came across We Love Pets?

To be honest, the only franchise I knew of was McDonald’s, and the fast-food concept was all I knew of franchising. I didn’t know it could be applied to smaller businesses!

What was your day to day like in your previous role?

I worked for Virgin Holidays and some of my responsibilities included selling holidays, booking staff’s holidays, etcetera. I got to work face to face with customers and help them plan their holidays, which I enjoyed! But I also had to manage a lot of administrative tasks, and my schedule wasn’t very flexible, which I didn’t love.

What was the final straw for leaving your previous job?

I was made redundant in August 2020, so the final straw was decided for me. However, the experience made me realise that I wanted my career to be in something I’m passionate about. I wanted to do my own thing, be my own boss and thrive while doing it. I love being outside and have always loved animals, so We Love Pets was super appealing. I finally thought, “if I don’t do it now, then when will I?”

How long had you been thinking about changing your career?

Even while I was in my last role, I had considered making a change. I knew that I didn’t want to work in an office long-term and would rather find something that let me work outside and ideally, with animals. Initially when I looked on the We Love Pets site I was interested in dog walker positions, but I stumbled across the franchisee case studies and once Ryan rung me, I knew a franchise was the right path for me.

Do you have any pets of your own?

Unfortunately, we don’t at the moment. We recently lost our dog of 12 years, and he was such a character. I really miss him! I definitely think we’ll get another dog in the future.

What do you love most about your area?

We moved to Haywards Heath about five years ago, and we love that it has convenient access to the city while also having so much lovely countryside! Our house backs up to Bolnore Woods which is brilliant for dog walks.

What have you done in the past that you think will help you in your new venture?

I definitely think my customer service skills will carry across – I’m really comfortable with meeting customers face-to-face or speaking to them on the phone, and have experience tailoring plans to their specific needs. I also have quite a bit of social media experience that I think will serve me well.

What hobbies do you have?

I love walking, and especially enjoy it when I get the opportunity to take a really long dog walk. My other hobbies include going to the gym, and attending theatre and comedy shows.

Which are your favourite animals?

I definitely think it’s got to be dogs. Don’t get me wrong, I love all animals! But dogs are so loyal and I love it when they wait at the door for you to get home.

What’s your biggest achievement in life?

Growing up I never really thought about having children, so becoming a mum to my two sons has definitely been my biggest achievement.

What do you think will be the best part of your job as a We Love Pets franchisee owner?

I love animals, so think the best part will being able to work with them each and every day. I’m also looking forward to having a flexible schedule where I can work the hours I want, whilst getting outdoors more.
