Dog Walking in Hot Weather: Keeping Your Dog Safe

As the weather starts to warm up, many of us are looking forward to spending more time outdoors with our dogs. However, dog walking in hot weather requires a little extra care to ensure our pets stay safe and comfortable.

While we may enjoy the sunshine, dogs can struggle to cope with high temperatures, particularly during exercise. Understanding the risks and making a few simple adjustments can help keep walks enjoyable throughout the summer months.

Why Hot Weather Can Be Dangerous for Dogs

Unlike humans, dogs cannot cool themselves down through sweating. Instead, they rely mainly on panting to regulate their body temperature.

This means they can overheat much more quickly than we do, especially during walks or playtime. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds such as Pugs and Bulldogs can be particularly vulnerable.

Choose the Right Time to Walk

One of the easiest ways to make dog walking in hot weather safer is to walk during the cooler parts of the day.

Early mornings and later evenings are usually the best times to head out, while the hottest part of the day is best avoided.

Check the Pavement Before You Walk

Pavements can become surprisingly hot in sunny weather and may burn your dog’s paws.

A simple test is to place the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds. If it feels too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog’s paws.

Signs of Overheating in Dogs

Keep an eye out for:

  • Excessive panting
  • Heavy drooling
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Bright red gys

If you notice any of these signs, move your dog somewhere cool and contact your vet.

Enjoy Summer Walks Safely

With a little planning, dog walking in hot weather can still be safe and enjoyable. Choosing cooler times of day, carrying water and paying attention to your dog’s behaviour can help keep them happy and healthy all summer long.
