Finding the right dog walking jacket

Finding the ideal jacket for a dog walk can be harder than it sounds. It is even harder to find a jacket that is suitable all year round for different kinds of weather. The best ones should guarantee to keep the water out and here is what to consider when buying a jacket…

What is the jacket for?

You may need to invest in two jackets; one that is substantial for rougher weather and another more lightweight that is packable and can be worn in warmer months.

Does it have a hood?

If you are likely to be walking your dog when it’s pouring down with rain or there is a strong wind, a hood is a necessity. In order to find a hood that does its job, you should ensure that it fits you properly and you can maintain vision whilst wearing it. Another feature that will improve the performance of the hood is draw cords that can adjust the hood around your face.

Does it have pockets?

Whilst dog walking, pockets are very useful as you often find yourself with lots to carry such as leads, poo bags and treats. It may also be useful to have pockets both externally and internally. Internal pockets may be the driest option since external pockets can let water in when opened.

Is it waterproof?

Jackets with a rating of 1,500mm to 2,000mm are suitable for everyday use. These jackets may also be suitable for walkers who aren’t likely to get caught out in heavy, sustained rain.

How much should I spend on a jacket?

Finding the right jacket doesn’t have to be expensive and there are plenty of well known outdoors companies that sell jackets for less than £30. However if you are looking to spend a bit more money on a jacket that will last, you can’t really go wrong.
